Peripera: Peri’s Ink Velvet in #6 Celeb Deep Rose, Powerpuff Girls edition

Peripera has come out with a Powerpuff Girls collaboration, and one of the products is their Ink Velvet lip cream/tint. You can wear it both ways! There is a regular edition available, but of course I had to buy the version with Powerpuff Girls on the packaging and container. Super cute, and the same price.

Packaging

The bottle is printed on one side with a Powerpuff Girls character, and just “Peripera” on the reverse side.

I used to casually watch Powerpuff Girls in high school, whenever it happened to be on. I wasn’t a rabid fan or anything; I just liked the humor! Blossom was my favorite, and just so happens to be the character on 06 Celeb Deep Rose. Perfect!

Although it’s called “Celeb Deep Rose” in English, the literal translation of 여주일공 is “Heroine”. Leading lady, female protagonist, etc etc. Translating it as “Celeb” works, too. And the other colors also have slightly different names in Korean!

The bright pink version with Bubbles is “Bubble Pink”, Blossom’s is “#6 Celeb Deep Rose”, and Buttercup’s is “#2 So Grapefruit”.

In Korean, Bubbles’ color is also “Bubble Pink”, but Blossom’s is “#6 Heroine”, and Buttercup’s is “#2 Racing Heart”.

Years ago, I used to be a serious scientist in a serious lab, believe it or not.  To me, the bottle looks just like the dropper bottles for chemicals, and I instinctively squeeze the cap every time. It’s solid plastic, however, and is not squeezable. I can’t imagine there being a dropper bottle for a lip product, anyway – that just wouldn’t work.

The applicator is a long doefoot applicator. The length of the rod is pretty short, but the doefoot itself is long and thin. I don’t really like the doefoot’s length, because there’s too much space to mess up and accidentally draw outside the lines. Ideally, I would prefer a shorter doefoot.

The entire line is ridiculously cute. I mean, look at the colors! That said, I would be hesitant to pull one of these out in public, because it does seem a bit too kiddie for this grown-up…

Formula

The packaging says it has a lacquer-like finish, which I do not agree with. A lacquer finish, to me, is glossy. This is definitely a matte product.

“Matte lips are dry? Peri’s Ink The Velvet is different!” says the advertising copy.

I don’t think it’s drying it all – my lips do just fine with only the product applied. It is dry but I didn’t find myself licking my lips in order to re-moisturize. I did try (for science!) to apply lip balm on top, for extra moisture, and that is doable, too. Except that adding lip balm cancels out the matte effect.

It also contains marine collagen, hyaluronase, organic jojoba oil, olive oil, and arnica extract.

Color

According to Peripera, this is a MLBB (my lips but better) shade. It is … depending on your skin tone. For me, it is slightly too neon pink in direct light, to pass as my own lips – but barely. In the evening, it does look like a dark MLBB.

Funny thing is, on my arm, it looks exactly as advertised by Peripera. On the left side is a thick layer of it, and on the right side, it’s been patted out by my fingertips. The only time it looks like this color on my lips is late in the evening, when it’s almost dark. For the rest of the time that I’m wearing it, it’s a completely different color that’s a grown-up, dark neon pink. That’s not a bad thing. I happen to like the color.

Generally, in normal lighting, it looks more like this. It really is a MLBB, but with a medium neon pink tone.

And here’s the (kind of) full-face look!

The following pictures are from Peripera’s marketing materials. It shows the two ways you can wear the color: applied directly, or patted out.

The official instructions say to pat it out with a moist tissue/towelette, in order to achieve the other color. Honestly, this just means that you can keep it on lipstick-style, or pat it out for the second color. I have not found it necessary to use a moist towelette. I just use my fingers, for the same effect. I don’t think you should use a dry tissue or cotton puff, however. That will take off too much of the product.

Scent

There was an attempt at a floral scent, but this attempt only went halfway. The other half still smells like plastic. It feels unnatural to put something that smells like that on my lips, but I don’t mind, because I can only smell it during application. After it’s on my lips for two or three seconds, I can no longer smell it.

Staying Power

The color stays through a greasy meal. I slathered Lao Gan Ma chili crisp oil all over a chicken/rice/broccoli dish, and when I looked in the mirror afterwards, the lip color looked exactly the same as before. It’s crazy.

And without a greasy meal, the full color stays for half a day. I start my day at 7 am, and the color only begins to fade around 1 or 2 pm. By evening, at around 6 pm, I have the faintest hint of color left. So what? I always reapply anyway.

And here’s what it looks like after 9 hours. Sorry about the different camera quality – the “before” is with a real camera, the “after” is with a smartphone. I applied the product at 7.30 am, and this is what it looked like at 4.30 pm. You can still see a faint hint of color. It is patchy, and I definitely need to re-apply.

Buy?

I normally don’t buy Peripera lip products, because they’ve always seemed too teenager for me – bright red, bright pink, bright orange. But Celeb Deep Rose is a lovely, grown-up color, and I could definitely see myself rebuying it again. I simply haven’t found any other shade like this in the Korean market. I would re-buy it even without the Powerpuff Girls packaging.
