Etude House Zero Sebum Matte Gel, after two weeks

mattegel-bottle

Right off the bat, I’m going to tell you that I like this product, and it’s worked well for me. Be aware that it is alcohol-based and I can easily smell the alcohol, so it may not be for everyone. Few products are, come to think of it.

It comes in the same pastel green and yellow colors of the Zero Sebum line. I love the packaging, even though that shouldn’t matter!

mattegel-cap

A safety foil seal, like most of Etude House’s tube products. It’s easy to peel off.

Ingredients! Here they are, again: Water, Alcohol, Methylpropanediol, Propanediol, Betaine, Sodium Polyacrylate, Pentylene Glycol, Peg/Ppg-17/6 Copolymer, Piper Methysticum Leaf/Root/Stem Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Pueraria Thunbergiana Root Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Paeonia Lactiflora Root Extract, Cnidium Officinale Root Extract, Origanum Vulgare Leaf Extract, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Leaf Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract, Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract, Cinnamomum Cassia Bark Extract, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Gossypium Herbaceum (Cotton) Extract, Soluble Collagen, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Pinus Sylvestris Leaf Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butylene Glycol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Disodium Edta, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Plankton Extract, Phenoxyethanol.

And here the ingredients are, on CosDNA. The major flag is PEG/PPG-17/6 copolymer, which rates as a 3 on EWG’s hazard ratings (moderate EWG hazards are those rated between 3-6) — and that’s because of the risk of contamination from ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane (both rated high at 10). Provided that there is no contamination, PEG/PPG-17/6 is a safe ingredient to use. There is limited evidence of sense organ toxicity, and hasn’t been detected in human tissue or urine.

It’s a clear gel, and takes about a minute to set. The alcohol content helps it evaporate, but doesn’t dry out my skin.  The gel makes my skin matte and without any hint of shine, yet it still feels moisturized! When I rub a finger against my skin, it feels smooth and matte – and yet still with the “wet”/springy feeling of moisturized skin! Especially when my finger tugs against my skin, I can feel that it hasn’t dried/caked up. Unlike, say, tugging against the skin at the back of my hand.  Now, that’s dry, and probably something I need to address.

This goes on as the last step of skincare. I’m not sure if that means before or after sunscreen… so far, I’ve been putting it under sunscreen.

The gel doesn’t have any cosmetic effect on skin. It doesn’t fill in pores, doesn’t add or remove color, doesn’t make your skin dull or brighter. It just gets rid of shininess, and keeps it away.

Crazily enough, this keeps my face matte all day. I have normal skin, but the corners at where my nose meets my cheeks get a bit greasy at the end of the day. With this gel, NO GREASE. None. At all. It’s almost unbelievable.

Note: It’s still spring in Korea, and the weather hasn’t hit sweat central yet. The gel works fine with the current temperatures, which hover around 16-20 ºC (62-72 ºF). I’ll be sure to update again when it gets hotter and more humid, which will probably be in July.
